Getting Married! What’s the process?

1) Contact me

Contact me to find out if I am available for your wedding date. I will reply with details about my services and provide you with a quote for getting married!

2) First meeting
Paperwork

We meet (usually in person over a coffee/beer) and from here we start the planning process by completing the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form.  This needs to be done no later than 1 month and one day before the wedding date and no earlier than 18 Months before the Wedding.

Please note that the marriage cannot take place until one month and one day after the date I receive the Notice of Intention to Marry form from you.

To be able to complete this form I’ll ask you to bring along with you original copies of the following to be used of identification purposes.

  • Photo Identification – Passport or Drivers License.
  • Proof of date and place of birth – Birth Certificate or Passport.
  • If either party has been previously married original copies of divorce paper or death certificate.

I’ll also take the time to explain to you what is legally required within the ceremony and what other legal components need to be completed throughout the wedding planning process.

The fun stuff

Next step we have a chat about the two of you, what type of wedding you want, duration, atmosphere and overall ambiance you want to create. Once we finish I’ll send you home with my “If you can complete this together then you are definitely ready for marriage!” Questionnaire. By answering this it gives me some insider information about the two of you and your relationship together.  I’ll also provide you with access to my Wedding Resource Book that has a magnitude of ideas and inspiration for what you might like to include in your wedding ceremony. (EG poems, wordings, music selections etc). And remember the sky is the limit on creativity!

3) Draft ceremony

With all the information that you have provided me I create a one of a kind ceremony, written about you and your partner and your unique love story. I provide you with a draft and ask you to provide feedback and we work together to make sure the ceremony is exactly what you want. I can even organise a few surprises for you!

4) Vows

Once you are happy with your ceremony the next job is getting your vows sorted. I provide you with a hug range of vows to choose from and or inspire you. If you would like to write your own I have a template to help guide you and get your creative juices flowing.

Writing vows can be a challenge for some but I’m right here to help offer advice, guide and support you to make sure you get them perfect for your special day.

5) Rehearsal – If you would like one!

Now a rehearsal is not a necessity but I feel it works great at settling any nerves! Usually done in the lead up to the big day at the same time and location the ceremony would normally take place. This allows me and your photographer (if they are available) to look at the overall location in regards to logistics and check any shadows or obstructions.

It’s a fun time for me to meet the rest of your attendants and we can logistically walk through the wedding ceremony process ensuring everyone knows exactly what their role is on the day. (But don’t worry we won’t be actually performing the ceremony we can keep that a surprise for the guests on the day).

We will also take the time to complete the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage form that needs to be completed as close to the wedding date as possible.

6) Wedding-time!

I will arrive at least 40 minutes early, in order to sound check, greet guests and cast a girl’s eye over everything; the attendants buttonholes, layout and so on. I’ll introduce myself to anyone doing a reading and set them at ease. I’ll speak with musicians or coordinators about music cues. I’ll make sure the rings are there and greet your guests and troubleshoot any issues before your partner arrives.

As the ceremony begins, it is my role to guide you both through the ceremony, the signing of the legal certificates, and finally present you to your family and friends as newlyweds! (Woohoo!)

You don’t need to invite me to stay. I usually leave after you and your attendants have had time to get congratulations from your family and friends and are heading off to get photos taken and your guests are venturing to the reception. (And after a Celebrant Selfie of course!)

7) Post-wedding

After the big day I’ll lodge your marriage with the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages (NSW weddings) and I will also obtain your official marriage certificate on your behalf (this is included in my fees). Once it arrives ill pass it onto you along with my “how to change your name after marriage” information kit.

2) Let’s Catch Up

We meet (usually in person over a coffee/beer) and have a chat about what you might like for your child/children’s Naming Day and Celebration (yep I’ll even do double naming days!).

Together we discuss any ideas and themes you might have in mind. We have a fun little brainstorming session and bounce a few ideas around. I’ll explain a general format that the ceremony can follow but as there are no legal requirements, you can include absolutely anything in your ceremony. You can be as bold, creative and imaginative as you like. The ceremony can be as long or as short and as formal or relaxed as you’d like it to be…After all it’s about your little one!

Once we finish I’ll send you home with my “Let’s get to know your little one” Questionnaire. By answering this it gives me some insider information about your little one and your family. I’ll also provide you with access to my Naming Day Resource Book that has a magnitude of ideas and inspiration for what you might like to include in your ceremony. Meet Anka McMahon

Get to know me!

Hi my name is Anka (yep just like on a boat!) and I’m pretty excited to say that I am an Authorised Marriage Celebrant and I absolutely love it!

A little about me….. I love a good glass of red by an open campfire, outdoor adventures, cooking up a storm and the satisfaction of crossing off a job on my daily to do list. I’m an over organised ambitious person (just ask my friends) who is a problem solver at heart. I love a good challenge and being able to use my jack of all trades skills to get a job done.

I have been happily married for over 8 years and together for over 15. Together Benny (my husband) and I have created one amazing wild at heart little girl who we both consider to be the love of our lives. She may drive me crazy at times but those platinum blonde curls, wicked laugh and baby blue eyes melt my heart and I can’t imagine my life any other way.

Since becoming a Mum my life took a new direction and I decided to take a chance on a crazy idea I had to become a Marriage Celebrant. I still have a day job working for our family run building business but my passion and labour of love is Anka McMahon Celebrant of Celebrations.

I have always wanted to do something different in our local community and I feel all of my choices in life and career paths have steered me right to where I am meant to be as a passionate, enthusiastic , modern and I’m going to say young Marriage Celebrant. (30ish is still young right..? I can still go on Contiki!)

I love working with my couples to create personalised ceremonies about them and their unique love stories that also reflect their own personal values, beliefs, styles and personalities.

Servicing the New England North West Region (and further if you want me) I’m always up for some fun with an original, modern non-religious approach. My ceremonies are more on the shorter side (approx 20 mins) but are jam packed with your story, love and laughs.

My experience is backed up with a Cert IV Celebrancy, Diplomas in Events, Tourism, Management, Interior and Graphic Design.  I have experience in public speaking and am also a Justice of the Peace for NSW.

Ready, wait for it…. (Slogan Time)

“If you would like a celebration as unique as you are and done the way you want it…
Then I’d love to be a part of your journey!”

I’d love to hear from you… Cheers Anka x

Can we get legally married?

Can we get legally married?

To be legally married in Australia, a person must:

  • Not be married to someone else
  • Not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister
  • Be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where one party is aged between 16 and 18 years old
  • Understand what marriage means and freely consent to marrying
  • Use specific words during the ceremony (That’s were I come in!)
  • Give written notice of their intention to marry to their authorised celebrant, within the required time frame. (Me again!)

You don’t have to be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia to legally marry here. You can find marriage visa information on the Department of Home Affairs website, if you hope to live in Australia after your marriage.
